Editing is one of the more unglamorous sides of being a photographer. It’s just you, your computer and hundreds of images to sift through and refine. One pro hack I have to make my time editing more enjoyable is listening to podcasts. Seriously, what did photographers do before podcasts were a thing?!
While there are a plethora of just-for-fun podcasts out there (I’m lookin at all you true crime fans!) I like to maximize my time by listening to podcasts that can help me in my business. Editing requires me to sit still for large chunks of time, so I might as well make the most of it, right? What’s better than walking away from a long work session than feeling accomplished and inspired? So next time you sit down to edit – tune into one (or all) of the podcasts below.
5 Podcasts Every Photographer Should Subscribe To
This podcast by Jenna Kutcher is one of my all-time favs because she doesn’t shy away from topics that we all want to know about. Some of her more recent episode titles are, “No One Told Us THIS About Being A Working Mom.” and “How To Stop Comparison Fatigue (without Quitting Instagram).” So yeah, she isn’t afraid to go *there* on her podcast. I find Jenna a healthy dose of real talk and inspiration, which is why she makes my top 5 list. Goal Digger is also a great resource if you’re interested in learning more about selling a product or starting a course.
The title is a clue that this podcast is geared towards us photographers – and it is! Each episode validates and educates photogs on the fact that what we do is equal parts art and business. I always feel super inspired and intrigued to learn more about the photographers they interview on this podcast and it’s reassuring to hear about other people’s journeys and know I’m not alone. Don’t miss his interviews with Jose Villa (episode 3 and 51) which are both fantastic!
I mean – if I didn’t include this podcast that would just be wrong! I’m obsessed with How I Built This with Guy Raz and, although the guests vary across multiple industries, I am usually picking my jaw up off the floor after every episode. Seriously – if you have to listen to just one, make sure you listen to the story of the people who started Slack. It’ll make you realize that, even when you have products or services that don’t work out, big things can happen in your business.
You’re probably very familiar with the name Amy Porterfield. She markets her podcast as “Expert interviews, mini execution plans, and intimate behind-the-scenes secrets from my biggest launches… all tied together by my mission to make EVERYTHING you listen to as actionable and profitable as possible.” And let me tell you – that’s *exactly* what it is. This is the type of podcast you can easily binge while driving – or editing, obviously.
I know, I know. I said it. The “m” word. But honestly, being a good photographer isn’t enough to grow your client base. You have to be a good business owner. And to be a good business owner – you MUST be comfortable talking about money. This podcast goes deep on our mindset around money and discusses strategies on how to manage money both personally and within your business. I highly recommend tuning in!
