I am surrounded by kickass couples, bridal parties and family members on the regular. Let’s call it an occupational hazard – and one that I love. I get to share so much about those people with you on the blog – but every once in a while I need to highlight my favorite vendors, too. It’s no secret that the wedding industry is booming and there is literally a sea of talent out there. To stand out, you have to be not just good — but GREAT. And that’s exactly what Beautiful Savage Flowers is!
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Naomi – owner of Beautiful Savage Flowers – on several occasions. Weddings, my baby shower, and I’ve even attended one of her floral design classes. Most recently, I met up with Naomi to take some headshots as well as some behind the scenes photos of her doing her thang in her ultra cute studio.
During the shoot, Naomi and I got to chatting more about her experience, how she started out, and some of her favorite parts of being in the biz.
Naomi is as sweet as she is talented and I am so excited to share a little bit more about her and her business with you today. She is truly cream of the crop! Read on and you’ll quickly see why!
Tell us a little bit about how you got started in weddings?
I studied Fashion Merchandising in college and at that time, my dream was to have my own wedding dress shop. I had it all designed and laid out in my head, I researched designers and even had a name for the shop all picked out, I was going to call it Rhapsody. But after graduating from college I ended up working in a flower shop for almost two years and realized that, as much as I loved fashion and dresses, flowers were what made me happy and truly spoke to my heart. I did my first wedding flowers for a friend and loved it! But at the time, I wasn’t at a point in my life that I could make it a full-time reality. I ended up going back into the world of fashion and corporate professionals. It took me almost 20 years to figure out how to get back to a life filled with flowers, but I did and I am grateful every day to be able to do what I love.
How would you describe your artistic style?
I would say that my style is relaxed and free-flowing with just a little bit of structure, which helps to give my work a clean and natural look.
What inspires you?
Fashion inspires me. My first love is flowers, but my second love is fashion…the colors, the textures, the patterns, the styles. It definitely influences me in my flower designs. Having this fashion background helps me when I am creating a look and feel for my clients. I don’t always see the specific flower first, I see the color and texture that I want and then find the flower that fits it.
What do you love about weddings?
I love that each of my brides is unique in her own way. Yes, colors and themes might be the same, but each bride has her own personal touch that makes her wedding different from all the rest and discovering what those personal touches are is what I love most about weddings. Seeing a brides face light up when she describes her dream wedding makes it exciting and inspires me to create unique designs that match her vision and what is important to her.
What are the most important factors couples should consider when choosing a florist?
Choose someone who is willing to listen first. Someone who will take the time to listen to you and understand what your vision is for your wedding.
What sets you apart from others in your field?
At the core of my business is the belief that every bride who comes to me should be treated how I would want to be treated. Flowers can be an overwhelming process and for the majority of the brides that come to me, this is the first time they are ordering flowers for a large event. The reality that buying flowers for the bridal party, ceremony and reception add up very quickly can be confusing and stressful. We work very hard to make the process as stress-free as possible while helping a bride to understand what goes into the cost of their flowers and why they are worth every penny you will spend on them.
What advice do you have for newly engaged couples?
Start your planning early so you are not stressing out at the last minute. Also, while Pinterest makes everything look super easy to DIY, when it comes to your wedding, hire professionals to bring your vision to life! This way, you can sit back and enjoy one of the most important days of your life!
