As soon as your love put a ring on it, you started thinking about your engagement shoot. You did your due diligence and found a photog you love. Your engagement session is scheduled. You’ve picked out your outfits and secured your location. BUT- you’re feeling a little uneasy about it all and not quite sure what to expect. To that I say….fear not! This post is for you and is going to walk you through how to prepare for your engagement shoot.
Most of my couples are a little nervous when it comes to getting in front of the camera. That’s understandable. There are a lot of unknowns and it can feel really awkward. My goal is always to make your experience fun, easy and most importantly…..stress-free!
I encourage both you and your fiancé to read (and follow) the five tips below. If you do, you’re guaranteed to be on the same page and ready to roll on the day of your engagement shoot!
How To Prepare For Your Engagement Shoot
#1 – Review My Blog
Sit down together and take a few minutes to peruse the recent engagement sessions on my blog. This will help you see the flow of a shoot and help to get the creative juices flowing. It’ll also take a little of the fear out of your shoot because you’ll notice that all of my clients look relaxed and happy!
#2 – Strike A Pose (or not)
It’s very common for couples (or even just one person) to feel worried about posing. They might ask what they should be doing? How should they be standing? When should they be smiling?
Just. Stop. Breathe. And listen.
Here’s the scoop. I’m going to show you exactly what to do, and guide you through the entire shoot. All I need for you to do is be yourself. Before you know it, you’ll be total naturals in front of the lens and you’ll probably forget I’m even there.
#3 – Treat Yo Self
Getting professional photos taken is a special occasion, so why not treat yourself to a little pampering beforehand? I always recommend my brides get their hair, makeup, and nails done before their engagement session. Who doesn’t love a good excuse to indulge in self-care (am I right)? And gentlemen, I’m talking to you, too! Get a fresh haircut and professional shave at the barber. You can even make this into a mini-date and go to lunch and get mani’s and pedi’s together!
#4 – Arrive Early
If you feel stressed out during your shoot, you’re going to see your stress in the photos. So, do what you can to eliminate any potential stressors. Arriving early to your engagement shoot location is one way to do this. Give yourself plenty of time for hair and makeup, getting dressed and fighting traffic. It’s better to be super early than to arrive 45 minutes late. Plus we wouldn’t want to miss that golden dusk light you’ve been dreaming of!
#5 – Breathe, Relax & Have Fun!
When it comes down to it, your engagement shoot is supposed to be fun! Don’t take yourself too seriously. Come in a celebratory mood. Go into the shoot expecting to have a great time (I promise this is my goal!). When you do these things, you’re going to walk away with killer photos of you and your love.
Another added bonus to having a great engagement shoot is that it gives us the opportunity to build trust in each other before your actual wedding day. I get the chance to know the real you, your love story and what makes your relationship special. It’s a win-win for everyone and will translate into the most amazing wedding photos.
So, what do you think? Are these 5 tips realistic? I think so! My challenge to you is to apply them and see what happens. I promise you’ll thank me when you see your finished photographs!
