How To Prepare For Your Maternity Session
There is little that compares to the excitement of finding out you are pregnant. For some of you, it may come as a huge surprise, for others – you’ve waited and waited and waited for the day to finally come to hear that you are expecting. Regardless of the road that led you here, I’m so so happy for you!
Forty weeks (give or take) can seem like a long time – but in hindsight – you’ll realize the time flew by. I encourage every pregnant person I know to schedule a maternity session. This isn’t about drumming up new business for myself, it’s about capturing the magic! Pregnancy is such a sacred time and you’ll treasure these photographs forever.
A maternity shoot can feel a bit overwhelming to plan, so I’ve included some tips on how to best prepare below.
#1 – Timing Is Everything
Pregnancy is one of the most unpredictable times in life – second only in comparison to actually raising a child! If you can at all plan out your session, I always recommend having your photos taken between 30-35 weeks. The cuteness level on the baby bump usually peaks around this time. Of course, all women carry babies differently – so you may find that you need to schedule your session for before 30 weeks or a little after 35. Just don’t wait too long!
#2 – What to Wear
Your maternity session will probably be the only time in your life that you’ll actually want to show off your midsection, so look for outfits that do exactly that! Rock that bump, Mama! Dresses are the natural choice for these sessions, and I encourage women to look for two options: something form-fitting and something flowy. Both work well for maternity sessions. Some of my favorite places to look are ASOS, Fillyboo, Nordstroms, and H&M. If you are local to OC, check out Common Thread in Costa Mesa!
#3 – Bring Meaningful Props
You might not think about incorporating props into your maternity session, but I think it can really work! An ultrasound photo, a pair of baby booties, a stuffed animal, or even some sort art that displays your baby’s name can work. Basically, anything that adds a bit of sentiment. If you’re not feeling props – that’s ok, too!
#4 – Pamper Yourself
Alright, Mama, I’m gonna be really honest with you right now – as soon as that baby arrives your own self-care is going to go straight out the window for a while. The time to pamper yourself is NOW! When it comes to your maternity session – opt for the works. Go get a massage, get your hair cut or colored and have your makeup and nails professionally done. You deserve it!
#5 – Embrace Exactly Where You Are
Pregnancy is truly an amazing time, but it can also be a confusing or uncomfortable time – both physically AND emotionally. I get it. I’ve been there. Your body doesn’t feel like your own (because it isn’t!), you have extra weight that you’re not used to (it’s normal!) and you’re stretching in more physical and emotional ways you could’ve anticipated (cue the tears!). But I promise you’ll look back on these photos with joy, awe, and appreciation for how AMAZING your body is. Please, please, PLEASE trust the process, go easy on the self-judgment and just embrace where you are!
