Ahhh that new baby life! I can remember the highs and the lows so vividly. The endless nights, counterbalanced by the endless newborn cuddles. It all feels overwhelming, amazing, confusing and precious – sometimes within the same 30-second interval.
Those first few weeks with a newborn can be quite an adjustment for everyone and, frankly, can be so very hard. Newborn photographs might seem like a near-impossible feat (especially for a mom in the postpartum period) but time and time again, new parents muster up all of their energy, mix in a little caffeine and invite me over. And, wow, am I 1000% grateful to be able to capture this season for you.
This Marina del rey newborn session with Baby Zella is a perfect example.

You might remember this gorgeous couple from past blogs. Emerald and Nathan’s engagement session, stunning wedding and most recently beachy maternity session are amongst some of my very favs. And let me just put out there that you can expect to see them again since I’ll be photographing Baby Zella a few more times during her first year of life.
I loved my time with this new family-of-three, spending a couple of hours in their home, watching them love on their little girl and talking all things newborns. I love it when my couples get real with me because honestly, that’s when we get the best photographs, too.
I look back at my own son’s newborn photos and it immediately takes me back to that season. I’m a strong believer that life doesn’t have to be or look perfect to be documented and loved.
When I look at these photographs, I see a thoughtfully curated nursery – but I also see four peaceful walls enclosing this new baby in safety and love. When I look at these photos, I see a gorgeous couple and cooperative newborn – but more importantly, I see the birth of a mother, the adoration of a new father and the bonding of a new family.
These newborn sessions are my favorite sessions. They aren’t the most glamorous – and certainly not the easiest (on any of us). But they are the most real. And that is a beautiful thing.
