Last week, I shared my top 3 tips for planning and surviving your family photo shoot. Today’s blog is complementary, but we get to talk about the really fun topic of STYLE. Planning your outfits might seem as overwhelming as picking the date and location, but it doesn’t have to be! A little education can go a long way here. Below are my top 5 tips on nailing your family photo session style!
Nailing Your Family Photo Session Style
#1 – Avoid falling victim to the trends of the year.
Shirts with cutouts, one-shouldered smocks and fancy fringe are all hot items of 2017….but, you don’t necessarily want your family photos to look like a time capsule in five years. Opt instead for classic pieces and outfits that represent YOU — not the runway.
Denim or chambray, solid colors, stripes or simple prints are always good options. Want to dress it up a bit? What about adding some statement jewelry or trend worthy boots? It’s all about balance!
#2 – Coordinate, but don’t match.
Prepping outfits for a family photo session can turn parents into match monsters. Don’t get hung up on one design. Not everyone needs to wear the same color top and if one person wears stripes, it doesn’t mean others can’t sport plaid or similar print.
Instead of focusing on matching, focus on complimenting. Is mom going for it with a bold red top or skirt? Maybe dad chooses a navy button-up with a herringbone vest over top. One of the littles can opt for a lighter shade like cream and the other a bright yellow. Mixing it up will add such loveliness and texture to your final images.
#3 – Don’t forget to take your location into account.
Are you an artsy family who is opting for your session to be downtown or in an eccentric neighborhood? If you want to feature a large mural as the backdrop of your session, you’ll want to avoid wearing bold colorful prints. Is your session going to be at your favorite park or on the beach? Think about the natural colors of your environment and then play off of that when deciding on your style.
#4 – Avoid distracting logos.
Ok, this is a tough one with kids. I totally get wanting to give your littles creative freedom when choosing their outfits for your family photo session. But, I promise you, you don’t want to see a huge yellow Pokémon character glaring back at you for years to come. These photographs are going to hang on your wall or sit atop your mantel, opt for logo and character-free tops and instead, a simple, classic print when it comes to dressing your babes.
#5 – Get all of the outfits prepped the day before.
I’m super casual when it comes to everyday dressing and getting ready – but my advice when it comes to professional photos: Bust out that iron! Tend to your outfits the night before your shoot, get everything up on a hanger and away from little hands. That way, everyone will look nice and neat when you arrive.
Worried about car seat or seatbelt wrinkles? Bring your tops on hangers and change on site. That way, everyone will look clean, crisp and fresh!
