What the heck is Kaysha doing blogging about newborn essentials? That’s what you’re thinking right?! Why would a wedding photographer be spending time talking to her audience about something other than weddings? Well- the answer is simple. Before I was a wedding photographer, I was a portrait photographer – and I still consider myself one today.
In even simpler terms….
People are my jam, and documenting life’s big moments make my heart happy.
I can’t think of a bigger life moment than having a baby. So, YES, let’s talk newborn essentials! Besides, I’m a new mom, so I’m kind of an expert on the subject matter.
My Newborn Essentials

There has been a natural evolution to my business. First came love, then came marriage, then came the baby in the baby carriage (well, in the birthing tub actually, but that’s a whole other story). Now that I’m a mom, it only seems fitting to spend a little time sharing what I’ve learned so far.
Below is a list of MUST HAVE newborn essentials. This is a great post to read if you’re expecting a baby through pregnancy or adoption, know someone who is or maybe just need a baby gift for an upcoming shower!
Dockatot – We’ve started using this product the day my son was born and it’s been such a lifesaver for sleep! He feels so cozy and safe in his Dockatot and, as a bonus, it’s super easy to travel with!
A Trusty Carrier – Baby wearing is the only way I get anything done during the day! There are a lot of different types of carriers, and I’ve found them all to be useful for different reasons. I have used the Solly Wrap, Ergo 360, and Boba Air. The Solly was great for the first few weeks, but the wrapping can be a little challenging if you’re in a hurry. The Ergo wins my vote for best construction and I love that with the 360 you can wear your baby in a lot of combinations since it allows for front and back carrying. The Boba Air is a mainstay in my diaper bag and my go-to for quick trips. Regardless of which carrier you choose, I highly recommend in investing in a good one (or two).
Dwell & Slumber – I recently bought one of these dresses, and I only wish I knew about them earlier! It’s a modern house dress (a fresh take on an old staple!) and so perfect for those first few weeks at home. The buttons are easy to open (which every nursing mother can appreciate) and the material is oh-so-lovely!
White Noise Machine – Want to help your baby sleep better and longer? A white noise machine is essential and something I wish I started using for my own sleep long ago! I don’t personally have the one tagged above, but I’ve heard really great things about it from several moms, so I wanted to include it for you!
Duckbill Valves – If you are breastfeeding or exclusively pumping, I’d recommend switching the standard valves on your pump out for these bad boys. Once I started using them I was able to pump WAY more milk. They are magic and super cheap! Total mom score!
Wubanub – Pacifiers are great, but any human who has ever offered one to a fussy or sleepy baby knows one thing: It’ll be seconds-to-minutes before the paci pops out and you’re on the hunt for it and cleaning it off. This was me (several times a day) until my lactation consultant recommended Wubanub! Basically, it’s a Soothie pacifier attached to a small stuffed animal – brilliant right? There are a bunch of cute animals to pick from, and now my son grabs onto the animal and can get the pacifier back into his own mouth. I can’t tell you how happy this makes me!
The New Moms School – Actual products you can use are great- but nothing beats having a strong support system! I’m so glad I signed up for the New Moms School in Newport Beach. Classes are arranged by your babies birth date, and each week, experts come to the class and share tips and suggestions for the particular stage your newborn is at. Plus, you get to connect with other moms who are going through exactly what you are. This has been invaluable to me! The New Moms School also offers complimentary breastfeeding and postpartum support groups so you should definitely check out their website for more!
Well, there you have it! A solid list of newborn essentials straight from the mouth and mind of a new mom (who happens to be a portrait and wedding photographer). I hope it’s the most interesting, yet helpful recommendation to come across your feed today! If you have any other recommendations to share, leave them in the comments section below!
