“Have you shot a wedding at my venue before?”
I would say that this is in the top five questions I get asked by couples inquiring about my photography services for their big day. Not to brag, but it’s a fairly easy sell if I have photographed another wedding at their site before. I have gorgeous images to show off and it’s easy for them to visualize themselves on their wedding day in that very same location. Not only do these photographs help them envision what their wedding photos might look like – but it showcases my style and point of view as a photographer. If we hit it off personality wise, we usually end up working together.
But what happens if I haven’t shot at their venue before? Is the potential partnership unlikely to happen because of that one factor? Couples may think so, but honestly, not having shot at your venue doesn’t worry me at all. Here’s why.
Why Your Venue Shouldn’t Dictate What Photographer You Hire
My Decade of Experience Makes Me Versatile
I’ve been in this profession for over ten years, and let me tell you – I’ve pretty much seen it all. And I’m not just talking about family member meltdowns, uncooperative ring bearers, and too-tipsy groomsmen. The more important elements I have to consider are the weather, lighting (and this changes with each season), and the time of day your wedding and reception take place. It only takes me a few minutes to size up any location, and the decade of experience is what gives me the know-how to handle the elements that could have a really negative impact on your final images.
I Come Prepared
I approach each wedding with the same level of preparedness whether I’ve photographed that location before or not. I have processes in place to ensure my camera bag is stocked, my second shooter is informed and you and your wedding coordinator know exactly what to expect from me. You can definitely expect me to arrive extra early to your location. This gives me the opportunity to survey the property, do some test shots and get any questions I have answered.
I’m Emotionally Here For You
Even though I’m confident that not having photographed your venue isn’t going to affect the outcome of your final product, I understand that your wedding day is very important and, like most important life events, this comes with a lot of emotion. If you’re anxious that I haven’t shot your venue before, but you do want to work with me – you can add a site visit to your wedding coverage and we can walk through the space together prior to your big day.
Regardless if you’re looking to work with me or another photographer, I hope these words help to put things in perspective. Your photographer shooting your wedding venue before should be viewed as a bonus. What’s most important is that you trust your photographer, you vibe personality wise and – of course – that you love their work.
