They say it takes a village to raise a child, and when it comes to planning a wedding it certainly takes a small army of skilled professionals! Over the last few weeks, I’ve spent some time with several different wedding pros and I’ve loved hearing their perspective, challenges and insights! When choosing your wedding vendors, it’s important to know that each plays a particular role in your wedding day puzzle. So don’t just think about your photography, but rather how it will relate to your makeup, coordinator, venue and overall theme. As wedding pros, we are here to make your life easier and this starts will selecting your team.
This got me thinking, and I’ve decided to start a semi-regular feature were I will interview other wedding vendors from different specialties for some insider info! I’m hoping this will not only introduce you to some amazing vendors, but reveal some tips and tricks to help create the wedding of your dreams!
First up, is the crazy talented Evelyn of Serene Bridal Beauty. I’ve worked with her several times and I’m constantly blown away with her professionalism and attention to detail. You can see our most recent shoot together HERE and HERE.
So without any further ado…
Tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you got started as a makeup artist/ hair stylist?
I started truly understanding the art of hair styling and makeup in my early teen years. I was such a tomboy, always wanting to play sports and beat up boys. My mom takes all the credit for who and what I am today. I remember her always telling me “beauty is pain” its really not, but she made it clear to me that first impression means a lot and you’ve got to always look your best before you step out of the house. She used to have me help her get ready and really got me into taking care of my own skin and hair. After two years of cosmetology school, I passed my Board exam and proudly received my Cosmetology License and off I went searching for a job. I landed a great job at a salon, but still felt like something was missing. I left the Salon after two years and studied Beauty and Character makeup at the Makeup Designory Academy in Burbank, CA. Finished the program and got several offers for music videos and commercials. This lifestyle was great, but I knew what I really wanted to do! I knew that making women feel beautiful was what I wanted. I can truly say that I feel so grateful and happy that I can make a bride feel her most beautiful on her special day.
How would you describe your style?
Fresh, refined, flaweless, timeless, and natural.
What kinds/brands of products do you use?
I love finding new products and seeing what will work best for my clients. There are so many products out there for all types of skin and hair. Here are a few of my favorite products:
MAC: Eyeshadow, Lip colors
Laura Mercier/ Armani: Foundation
Smash Box: Primer (Photo Finish)
Model in a Bottle: Make-up setting spray
Kenra: Thermal Setting Spray, Hair Spray
Beadhead: Shine finishing spray
Morocan Oil: Hair treatment
If you had to choose one piece of makeup, what would it be and why?
Foundation! Foundation completes the entire face. Without foundation, you have no start or finish to complete the entire look. Matching the right color can make the biggest difference.
Why is professional hair and makeup so important for weddings?
Your wedding day is one of your most important days of your life, you want to look and feel beautiful along with being stress free. Its important to hire a professional that specializes in bridal hair and makeup, someone that is experienced and understands all the different situations that may occur. Your professional stylist is someone who makes sure that the entire bridal party is finished on time, understands different styles of hair and makeup, and knows how to take care of the bride. Timing is a big key, and finding the right stylist that understands all these complexities will make your wedding day run much smoother.
What happens during a Preview Session?
Although a preview is not required, I highly recommend scheduling one! A preview will determine the outcome of your hair and makeup. During the preveiw session, we will determine what style fits you and your wedding best. Your stylist will ask you a few questions to get a good sense of your taste and style. After understanding what the bride is asking for, we will then completely style your hair and apply makeup to get the full affect as if you are getting married. Having a preview will help you feel more at ease on the day of your wedding.
What is your favorite part of bridal hair and make-up?
Creating that perfect look each bride has envisioned, and making her feel truly beautiful.
What tips would you give brides to maximize their hair and makeup?
Research, you want to make sure you are hiring a competent professional. Make sure you are looking for a stylist that specializes in “bridal” makeup and hair styling. You may not understand why, but trust me… a stylist should understand that it’s not just hair and makeup, but the whole package. It’s understanding timeing, guiding the bride, being the her assistant.
How soon should a bride book and confirm her hair and makeup artist?
It is best to book your stylist once you have chosen your wedding date. It is recommeneded to have your preview 2-3 months before your wedding date.
Any last tips or suggestions?
Just remember, its important to find the right stylist. It is one of your most important days and you want to make sure your stylist takes care of you and knows what she/he is doing.
