As wedding season quickly approaches I wanted to take a moment to chat about “first looks.” If you’ve never heard of this before, it’s when the couple chooses to see each other before the ceremony. This has become very popular in the last few years, and for good reason. It allows couples to take the majority of their photos before the ceremony, so they can start the celebration right away and actually enjoy their cocktail hour.
This is of course a very personal decision, and many people choose to stick with tradition. In my experience, as long as we have a well planned out (and realistic) timeline it won’t affect your photography. So I’ve compiled a list of pro and cons to consider when choosing what is best for you.

PROS
- Capturing the moment you see each other for the first time in an intimate and controlled setting.
- The majority of all formal portraits can to be taken before the ceremony begins.
- You will be able to spend time at your cocktail hour, if you wish.
- Added time with your fiancé on your wedding day.
- You’ll be able to calm your nerves by seeing each other.
- Helps create a less complicated timeline for the day.
- The brides hair and makeup will be fresh for photos.

CONS
- It goes against tradition.
- First looks can feel staged or forced.
- You will see your family for photos before the ceremony, so there will be no surprise when you walk down the aisle.
- Photos after the ceremony will be limited to your allotted cocktail hour time. Squeezing in family formals, wedding party, and portraits within an hour can feel rushed and stressful.
- If you have a sunset or night ceremony, your portraits will have to be photographed with flash. This is not my ideal lighting situation, so your photos will look very different than what you see in my portfolio.

I personally chose to do a first look at my own wedding, and it was the perfect decision for us as a couple. I felt more relaxed, at ease, and excited for the ceremony. When the moment came to walk down the aisle all the emotions were still there, and I cried my eyes out. :) Regardless of what you choose, know that I will work with you to plan your photography accordingly.
Great things to consider! I wish I had done a first look, it would have been fun to document the special moment before the wedding craziness! ;)
