I had the pleasure of working on several weddings with Heidi Davidson Design last year, and from the moment I saw her stunning working, I was in love! Seriously, her work speaks for itself, but today I’m really excited to introduce you to the women behind this beautiful penmanship. She was kind enough to share more about how she got started in the industry, her style, and awesome tips!
This is great knowledge for all of my readers, but I want you newly engaged folks to really tune in because Heidi Davidson knows what you need!
Tell us a little bit about how you got started in calligraphy and invitations?
My previous job had 3 huge chalkboards that I would design every month. I started getting so many comments on them that I finally recognized lettering as an innate passion and talent. Next came an Etsy shop and a lot of freelance lettering work for restaurants and shops. Once I shifted my energy toward weddings, a whole world opened up for me. Calligraphy and invitations followed naturally and I’ve never looked back.
How would you describe your artistic style?
I like to think of my artistic style as romantic and timeless. When I am just playing with my ink and paints, I go for bold colors and patterns. When I am doing wedding work, I absolutely love creating pieces that feel more elegant and classic; something you’ll still love in 15 years. I think your wedding is your chance to create an insanely beautiful event, and your calligraphy and signage should enhance that!
What inspires you?
Sunsets, laughter, charming cities, living in the moment, podcasts, dessert, & plants. I’m endlessly inspired by my clients- their kindness and excitement. And I am inspired by working in a wedding industry full of insanely talented creatives who are equally supportive as they are talented.
What do you love about weddings?
Creating an unforgettable moment. I love knowing that this one day and one moment in time will be remembered forever. I also love that a wedding is an all-out celebration of love! Getting to know a couple is such a joy. I think about my couples past and present all the time! I feel insanely lucky to be in this industry and doing something I love.
What are the most important factors couples should consider when choosing a calligrapher or invitation designer?
I think it’s really important to choose a designer/calligrapher’s style who matches your own or the style of your wedding. When you trust your designer, they will create their best work and come up with completely unique ideas knowing they have your trust. Experience is also key- working with an experienced designer doesn’t just mean you get a completely custom, stunning invitation. It means you have someone to guide you through the etiquette, timelines, and endless material options. They take the stress out of the invitation and signage process, and let you enjoy it!
What sets you apart from others in your field?
I think the main thing setting me apart from others in my field is my breadth of services. I am first a calligrapher, so I incorporate custom-designed calligraphy into just about everything I design. I am also an illustrator and create custom artwork. Getting to offer custom save the dates, wedding invitations, and day-of signage & stationery makes my clients lives easier and allows them to have beautiful, cohesive designs from start to finish. I also care, a lot. My business is like my second baby and each client I work with is truly important to me.
What advice do you have for newly engaged couples?
Enjoy the planning process as much as possible! Start early on planning your big day so you’re not bombarded with too many contracts, options, and deadlines at once. Choose details that feel like you. I think a lot of couples try to emulate a wedding they have seen in the past, but this is your opportunity to create something new & YOU! Get late-night Taco Bell for your guests, have a live Beatles cover band, put gummy bears on your wedding cake (like we did). Throw in some details that make your guests say “that is SO them!” And most importantly, when your wedding day comes, breathe and take it all in!
