Whats on your plate?

Jan 11, 2010 | Personal

Nearly 3 years ago I read a book that changed my life.

At the time I had no intentions of making any adjustments to my life, let along my diet, but with each page something inside me shifted. Fast Food Nation, written by Eric Schlosser opened my eyes to an industry that I quickly realized I didn’t want my hard earned money supporting. Within a week I turned down meat for the first time and since then I haven’t looked back. Although I am not a full fledged vegetarian, (technically I’m a pescatarian because I abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish) I haven’t eaten a single piece of meat in years! Surprisingly, this transition has been one of the easiest things I’ve ever done! I never set out to become a vegetarian, I simply wanted to test the waters. Before I knew it months had past and I didn’t miss meat one bit! To this day bacon cooking still smells heavenly, but I’m happy and healthier for the choice I’ve made!

After hearing many people praise the movie Food Inc. I was intrigued and yesterday I finally got the chance to watch it! Let me just say that I’m not trying to turn anyone into a vegetarian but rather help support better farming practices and higher food safety standards. I’d highly recommend EVERYONE to watch this film with an open mind, and just see how you feel differently about the food your choosing to eat. After watching the film I was honestly overwhelmed but I’m trying to concentrate on the things I can control… what I purchase. Below is a list of small changes taken from the films website you can starting doing today to impact our food system for the better.

This is an issue that effects everyone! Supporting your local farmers and switching over to organic foods will help change the way our food is produced forever. If your in Orange County I’ve linked to a list of Certified Farmers’ Markets HERE and an additional list HERE. For more information please check out TakePart.com/foodinc.

How do you plan to make a difference? What did you think of the film?

Hi Kaysha – Excellent! I’ve changed my food for sure, though eating out and eating fast food up here isn’t the “norm.” I have started not eating things with High Fructose Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated Oils too. Both items are horrible for our systems! We also raise our own meat, lamb. We do not use chemicals for our sheep and raise them as ‘organic’ as possible though we do feed them hay which is not “organic” though it is local. I guess you could say they’re naturally raised. :)

@Joan- Your incredible! I wish more people were raising their own meat and making the changes you already have! Keep it up! :)

Super cool! I can’t wait to watch it. Although we are not vegetarians, we try our best to eat as healthy as possible-organic as much as we can afford ;), and because our kids have always eaten very little processed foods we are convinced they will live to be 120 :)Thanks for the info…more people should live/eat this way.
